Initial Ideas
My original
idea for my proposed video using the track “I used to have an open mind” by
midnight carnival was to create a 100% performance based music video using the
TV studio at college and taking a variety of shots to match with the track.
Unfortunately the entire band weren’t willing to appear in the video so my
original idea was not possible. After talks with the band members I decided to
create a half narrative half performance base music video, with a simple linear
narrative intercut with the lead singer performing in the studio in addition to
him acting out the narrative. Unfortunately these plans fell through because
the lead singer was not available for the dates I proposed to shoot the
footage, so I decided to have 2 actors interpreting the video and have some
studio shots of the lead singer. Unfortunately the lead singer was not clear on
availability so I decided to do a 100% narrative based music video. I decided
to add in flashbacks to help create a clearer narrative and a sufficient amount
of footage to go with the track. I used two actors in this video to create a
more flowing narrative.

Audience Research & Target Audience
Chosen Target Audience
Chosen Target Audience
My chosen
target audience is Males and Females aged 13-19 because this seemed to be the
average age in the video’s I studied relating to the genre of my track. The
videos I researched are the sort of music and video style my peers and I regularly
watch and listen to. My proposed video and the videos I researched also relate
to issues people of this age group frequently come across. I am going to use
actors of this age group to make the video seem more relatable to my chosen
audience. I am hoping to achieve a narrative flowing video with flashbacks
included. I have chosen universal imagery of a heterosexual couple also to add
a sense of realism to my narrative. I am intending my music video to be read as
a character that is seriously struggling to come to terms with a break up and
cannot understand why his Ex will not give him another chance. I have chosen to
use a mobile phone and Facebook picture which then gets ripped up this
symbolises the fact that the Ex is not coming back.

Proposal
Proposal
In this
coursework project I am going to create a music video for a local band Midnight
Carnival, the track I have chosen is “I Used to Have an Open Mind” a track the
band released early 2011. I have chosen to create a narrative based music video
on my interpretation of the lyrics. My music video will be shot mainly in and
around my local area of Whitstable. The main focus of my video will be the
narrative theme of a boy who has a psychological inability to get over his
latest ex and is willing to constantly wait forever for her. The proposed video
should document the establishment of an emotional breakdown throughout the
video. The theme of waiting will be present in my video so I am going to film in
several different locations where people would normally wait. I will need quite
a significant amount and variety of shots in each location to keep the
audiences attention and to keep up with the pace of the track. I have chosen to
include 2 hand held shots from the main characters point of view the reason I have
chosen to do this because it helps signify emotional instability. I am using
two actors one male and one female to help keep the narrative running. The
female will be featured in a flash backs to when the relationship ended and in
the main male characters imagination. The use of flash backs is one of the
conventions in several narrative based music videos.
Inspirations for this music video include Simple Plan-Your Love Is a Lie, Taylor Swift-Whitehorse and AFI-Silver and cold(examples of videos with narratives and linking themes). The performance elements are inspired by Saving Aimee-Small TalIk. I am planning to shoot my proposed music video between the 20-28th October 2011.
